WATER MANAGEMENT

Two-thirds of the population of the Kerala state has no assured drinking water throughout the year. Although Kerala has a large number of wetlands the water quality of these bodies is too poor to be used for domestic purposes. The most important sources of drinking water are the freshwater lakes, rivers, ponds, streams, wells and springs which are being polluted.

The AB Model for conservation of water in water scarce cities, towns and villages has gone a long way in solving water scarcity, especially during summer. Rainwater harvesting, setting up of mini water supply systems, revival and protection of traditional water sources such as wells and ponds are some of the measures which form part of this model.

Projects under the AB Model envisaged uninterrupted supply of clean drinking water to more than five million people.
